One question we hear all the time in interviews is, “what are you doing to keep up-to-date on new technologies?”  When it comes to being a professional developer, your education never ends.  Companies are looking for people who keep growing both technically and personally, and here are some ways to help you develop as a developer


Joining communities where you can practice writing code and receive feedback from others is a great way to stay attuned with the programming world.  Sites like offer challenges and different opportunities to explore open source coding as well as collaborate with peers.

Improve Soft Skills

Soft skills are transferable skills such as communication, leadership, and critical thinking which help with working harmoniously in the work environment.  This skills are sometimes undervalued but are essential to growing professionally within your field.  Since these skills can’t just be learned from a book, they are considered more challenging to develop.  This WikiHow article offers some guidance in small actions that you can take to help improve your soft skills in the workplace.

Learn a New Language

In most fields, this would mean German or French, but as a developer, it is important to widen your understanding with a firm knowledge of different scripting languages.  Cross-training your skills can be a long and complicated process, but it will show future employers that you are invested in your education.  It shows that you can easily learn and are committed to growth within the company.  This can also cast a wider net when looking for jobs in the future.

Attend Events
